Wie fühlt sich ein Frosch, der eigentlich nur auf dem Sofa chillen will – stattdessen aber zur Projektionsfläche politischer Ideologien wird? Was passiert mit einer unpolitischen Comicfigur, wenn sie zum Symbol rechtsextremer Internetkultur mutiert und von Donald Trump höchstpersönlich als Meme retweetet wird?
In Save Pepe setze ich mich mit der kulturellen Vereinnahmung von Pepe the Frog auseinander – einem Internet-Meme, das einst als entspannt kiffender Comic-Frosch begann und inzwischen in rassistischen, antisemitischen und hasserfüllten Kontexten verwendet wird. Das Meme verknüpfe ich mit dem Clubhit „L’amour toujours“ von Gigi D’Agostino – ursprünglich ein harmloses Liebeslied, das 2024 auf einer Party auf der deutschen Insel Sylt mit fremdenfeindlichen Parolen gesungen wurde.
Ein chillender Frosch und ein Clubhit über ewige Liebe sind irgendwo falsch abgebogen. Wurden gekidnappt, instrumentalisiert, vereinnahmt und zu Symbolen für Hass und Hetze. In spielerischer, ironisch gebrochener und zugleich zutiefst ernster Weise stellt das Stück die Frage: Können wir solche Symbole „zurückholen“? Darf Pepe einfach nur ein Frosch sein und „L’amours toujours“ einfach nur mitreißende Musik?
Pepe begibt sich auf eine metaphorische Reise – das romantische Motiv des Wanderns lässt grüßen. Er verlässt die toxischen Foren der Netzkultur und sucht nach Ursprünglichkeit, nach einem Ort, an dem er als Frosch zuhause ist. Erzählt wird diese Reise von einer Stimme aus dem Off, angelehnt an BBC Nature-Dokumentationen. Die Stimme ist KI-generiert und spricht jeweils in der Landessprache des Aufführungsortes – ein Hinweis auf die Vielstimmigkeit Europas.
Zudem ist ein „prepared audience“ Teil der Komposition: Das Publikum erzeugt Naturklänge und übernimmt die Rolle der Umwelt. Denn am Ende gilt: Wir alle sind Teil des Lebensraums dieses Froschs. Als vielstimmiges, demokratisches Kollektiv entscheiden schließlich wir, ob der Frosch von Hass und Fremdenfeindlichkeit – oder von Natur und Liebe umgeben ist.

How does a frog feel when it actually just wants to chill on the sofa - but instead becomes a projection screen for political ideologies? What happens to an apolitical cartoon character when it mutates into a symbol of far-right internet culture and is retweeted as a meme by Donald Trump himself?
In Save Pepe, I deal with the cultural appropriation of Pepe the Frog - an internet meme that once began as a relaxed, pot-smoking comic frog and is now used in racist, anti-Semitic and hateful contexts. I link the meme to the club hit “L'amour toujours” by Gigi D'Agostino - originally a harmless love song that was sung with xenophobic slogans at a party on the German island of Sylt in 2024.
A relaxing frog and a club hit about eternal love took a wrong turn somewhere. They were hijacked, instrumentalized, appropriated and turned into symbols of hatred and agitation. In a playful, ironically broken and at the same time deeply serious way, the piece asks the question: Can we “reclaim” such symbols? Can Pepe just be a frog and “L'amours toujours” just be exciting music?
Pepe embarks on a metaphorical journey - the romantic motif of wandering echoes. He leaves the toxic forums of internet culture and seeks originality: a place that he can call ‚home‘, as a frog. This journey is told by narrator voice, inspired by BBC Nature documentaries. The voice is AI-generated and speaks in the national language of the performance location - a reference to the polyphony of Europe.
A “prepared audience” is also part of the composition: the audience creates sounds of nature and thus becomes the environment. Because in the end, we are all part of this frog's habitat. As a polyphonic, democratic collective, it is ultimately up to us to decide whether the frog is surrounded by hatred and xenophobia - or by nature and love.
